This weekend, 52 year old dad met his 18 year old son's girlfriend for the first time - the pair both came to stay with us for a couple of nights. This set the family bush telegraph alight and phone's were buzzing with antennae-like ears directed to find out the goss on what she is like.
Engaging in this type of discussion is like throwing a pebble into a nuclear pond. The ripples can escalate rapidly into a tsunami of disinformation - particularly in my family. Not even Cold War spies faced such risks as these. If it's not too offensive these days to say, Chinese Whispers float around any interaction in my crowd, with the potential to damage relationships for and across generations.
And the risk is even more nuanced with my daughter who actually has a Chinese boyfriend, so we have genuine Chinese Chinese Whispers - I'll say no more.
Anyhow, this is how it went down.
The irony of the above is that the only person who is definitely a bastard is Loki, albeit purely on a technicality. He's the most innocent of the lot.
